Rites For Father Of 8 Who Were Killed in ’56 Crash

SIGOURNEY, IOWA - Funeral services will be at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church near Sigourney, Iowa this morning for Richard P. Hammes, 61, of Sigourney, Iowa, whose eight children died in a car-train accident in 1956 that ranks as one of Iowa’s worst traffic accidents.
Keokuk County sheriff’s officers said Hammes body was found Thursday morning in a wooded area along the banks of the South Skunk River about four miles north of Ollie, Iowa.
County Medical Examiner, Opas Jutaba ruled that death was caused by a self-inflected rifle shot.
Hammes had been missing since Monday night, when he was last seen by friends in Sigourney, Iowa. His car was found early Thursday morning near an old boat-landing dock beneath a bridge over the river.
Found Body

Searchers combed the wooded areas along the river banks and found his body in a seated position at the base of a tree. Officials were unable to determine the exact time of death.
Hammes was picking corn on his farm near Sigourney, Iowa October 25, 1956, when he was informed by law enforcement officials that all eight of his children were killed when a Rock Island Lines freight train ripped into the family auto at a “blind” crossing near Sigourney, Iowa.
His wife, Ruth, who was driving the children to school, was the only survivor of the collision.
Mrs. Hammes was still a patient in a Sigourney hospital when more than 1,000 persons attended the funeral for the eight children at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in the rural, unincorporated community of Clear Creek eight miles east of Sigouney, Iowa.
The children who ranged in age from 9 to 1 and included two sets of twins, were buried in a mass grave at the church cemetery.
Nearly two years later Mrs. Hammes gave birth to another son, Myron, now 14, who is the only survivor of the Hammes family.
Heart Attack

On April 4, 1960, Mrs. Hammes then 41 died of a heart attack while awaiting the birth of another child. The child was stillborn.
Until about a year ago, Hammes continued his farming and fur-buying operations that he was involved in when the tragedy first struck. Young Myron lived for several years with Hammes’ sister, Mrs. Cleo Conklin of Harper, Iowa, until Hammes re-married. Myron then moved in with his father.

The second marriage ended in a divorce about two years ago, according to friends of the family and Hammes was observed becoming increasingly despondent.
Keokuk County Sheriff J. Bud Wallerich, a lifelong friend of Hammes said that the man never got over the deaths of his children in that accident.
“I had reports that he had been brooding about it quite a bit lately,” Wallerich said.
High Mass

A requiem high mass will be celebrated by seven priests at 10: a.m. today in the same church in which Hammed attended the funerals of his wife and children. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Sheriff Wallerich said Myron probably will move in with his aunt, Mrs. Conklin. Other survivors include three other sisters and five brothers, all living in the Sigouney, Iowa area.

28 Edrie attended Lake View, Iowa public schools and graduated from the Lake View High School in 1937. Edrie lived with her parents and grandparents in a house in Lakeview that backed up to Blackhawk Lake. They had their own dock where they fished. During high school, Edrie worked at the Blackhawk cafe as a waitress.
After Edrie graduated from high school she worked for Dr. Gibson, as a receptionist. Edrie's cousin, Darlene Lille, introduced her to Vern Vogel while he was in the
Lakeview area selling Fuller Brush products. Vern left for Baltimore, Maryland to work in the aircraft plant at the beginning of World War II. In late March of 1942, Edrie joined him in Baltimore and they were married on April 7, 1942.
As soon as they were married, Vern had to go back to work; so they didn't getto go anywhere for a honeymoon. Just after their first daughter, Sheryl, was born Vern joined the Merchant Marines; so Edrie and Sheryl moved back to Lakeview were they lived until the war was over.
Edrie was always a homemaker and mother to the three girls, as Vern was out of town a great deal of the time on business. In 1947 they moved to Des Moines and lived there until 1951, at which time they moved to Wichita, Kansas.
In the early 1960's Edrie became involved with Holy Family Center, a school for handicapped children. She has a special place in her heart for these children and is always ready to help them whenever she can.
Ochs, Edrie Lorraine (I354)

29 Jacob C. Vogel was raised and attended school in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa. When he was old enough to work he worked for farmers in the area until about 1907, or about 21 years old, he migrated to the area of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada. The reason he and other area farmers went to Canada was because some of the neighboring farmers had gone to the Seattle Worlds Fair and saw
promotions of homesteading in Canada and came back to Iowa with the news.
Jacob and his brother Andrew went out together and each aquired a farm. Jacob's farm was legally described as N. W. 1/4 23-45-4W, which consisted of 160 acres. There was a two story house on this land besides a row of lovely spruce trees. Jacob was a thresherman, owning an Avery Steam Engine, one of the biggest of its kind at that time. He, also, bought the threshing machine in 1909. With this
threshing machine, he did custom work for many of the local farmers. The crew totalled twenty men at a time, several men were needed to keep the steam engine at full steam, so it must have been a busy time.
Jacob went to Iowa for Christmas in 1910 where he became better aquainted with Anna Hammes, whom he had known earlier but was not serious. They got married on February 22, 1911 and went back to Canada with intentions of only staying a year, however it was 1916 before they came back to Iowa.
Jacob would haul grain into Wetaskiwin with two wagons, one had a team of horses, the other a team of mules. When the grain was unloaded, the team of mules would be turned loose, and they would find their way home by themselves.
An interesting incident happened in the fall of 1915, Jacob had done some threshing on the east side of Battle River using the Gould crossing. It was late in the season, and snow had covered the roads. The road from the Gould Crossing was steep and winding and Jacob decided to chain the back wheels of the threshing machine so it would not go down the hill so fast, but alas! as with many a plan, it did not work and when he started down the hill the threshing machine upset over the bank. Jacob left it there until spring, and then took it apart, and hauled it home and put it back together again. He soldit at his auction sale in 1916. The steam engine was purchased by Dick Humbke who used it for many years. This same steam engine did have its trials too. Fritz Humbke tells how one time they were crossing the Haultain Lake on the road, the grade was very soft, it gave away, and the steam engine upset on its
side. After several days hard work it was righted and continued on its way. This steam engine was eventually dismantled.
Jacob, Anna and their two sons Alvin and Ralph moved back to Iowa and purchased a farm near Derby in Lucas County where they lived for about four years. In 1920 they sold that farm and purchased another farm five miles south and one mile west of Chariton, Lucas County, Iowa where they remained until Jacob passed away at the age of 48 years 3 months and 5 days.

34 E-MAIL MESSAGE
Eugene passed away at about 1:40 this morning, Iowa time. Two weeks ago he was in the hospital with pneumonia. The Parkinson's had pretty much taken his esophagus and trachea muscles. They brought him back to Halcyon House because there was nothing more they could do for him. He could only sip little bits of broth and juice and have it go down. Last Wednesday, he began the final process. By Friday he could no longer get even sips down. He has not suffered although his breathing became more and more labored. He has fought Parkinson's for 25 years. He has had no equilibrium and has been in a wheel chair for about a year and a half, has barely been able to speak for the last six months. He is now at peace. God bless us all.

Norbert Hammes turns 100

Norbert and Marie Hammes attend lunch at the Fairfield Senior Citizen Center about once a week and stay to play bingo.
They also enjoy attending Seniors’ Night Out, which includes supper and music.
“We used to play cards a lot,” Marie said.
They are involved with their church, St. Mary Catholic, attending activities and services there.
“I belong to the Knights of Columbus and attend meetings and we have breakfast some Sundays,” said Norbert. “St. Mary conducts services at area nursing homes and we’ll go there too.”
The Hammeses were married in November 1940, and are looking forward to celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary.
On March 19, Norbert celebrated a different milestone, turning 100 years old.
“It was a big day. We had planned 300 guests at his birthday party,” said Marie.
Most of their descendants live in Iowa and last Christmas included a gathering of 71 relatives.
Norbert and Marie had seven children, one is deceased. The have 16 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
“Whats fun about our great-grandchildren is we have 17 girls and 17 boys,” said Marie. The oldest great-grandchild is already out of college.”
Norbert grew up on a farm south of Harper, Iowa in Keokuk County.
As the oldest sibling on nine, he had his share of chores and work.
“We grew crops and raised hogs, cattle and sheep all out in the pasture,” he said. “And we had chickens, too. I liked having animals and I liked farming.”
He was a young boy of 3 when his family’s home burned. “I was out in the corn crib and turned around to see flames from the house,” he said. No one was seriously injured in the fire.
“Dad went to Grandpa’s timber and cut logs to build another home,” said Norbert. “Neighbors helped haul sand to lay a foundation.”
He remembers shopping trips to Sigourney and seeing traveling tent shows there. “It was like a circus, with elephants and animals,” he said.
Chores and school took up most of his time but he recalls playing baseball with friends on Sundays. He hunted around the farm, not for meat, but for fur. “Deer weren’t around back then,” he said.
In 1947, Norbert and Marie bought their own farm in Center Township in Jefferson County. “I remember 1947 was a challenging year, it was wet like this one,” Norbert said. “We planted corn and beans and raised hay for our cows. We got rid of the cows in 1969.”
Marie said they sold milk, and used to have a large vat for the milk storage.
“We had 196 acres until the roads came through,” she said. “Putting in the roads took 4 acres off out farm.”
Norbert said he had a windmill and a 32-volt wind charger, which supplied their home and dairy with
electricity.
“We had really great neighbors,” said Marie. “Everyone was so friendly and worked together.”
The Hammeses moved into town in 2009, leaving their youngest son, John to work the farm.
“I used to be active with Farm Bureau, the Lions and Elks,” said Norbert. I still attend the KC.”
Marie said Norbert also used to deliver a newspaper in Fairfield, Iowa. “The Lions used to deliver the paper in the early morning, and Norbert was faithful about that,” she said.

“I’m thankful to still be able to get around,” said Norbert. “I like to read especially mysteries. And I like to work puzzles.”
He still drives a car a short distance in town.
