Clarissa Margaret Hammes
Child Killed By Auto
Indignation ran high when our people learned of the cowardly act of the man who ran over Constant Hammes's little child Saturday evening and never stopped his car to see what harm he had done. These details of the affair are taken from the Sigourney Review.
"There was an awful accident in the south east corner of German township last Saturday evening about seven o'clock. The seventeen months old baby girl of Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Hammes was run over by a passing automobile and died Sunday morning from injuries received.
The driver of the car never stopped and his identity, if known, has not been revealed.
The Hammes family live along the public road and Saturday evening while Mrs. Hammes milked the cow and little daughter played just across the fence from the cow yard by the road side, an automobile went driving past and ran over the child. The mother screamed but the driver went on. She gathered up her babe, sent for a couple of doctors, but the little one passed away Sunday morning early.
Whether the driver of the car was drunk and paid no attention to where he was going or whether he did not see the child or hear the mother is not known but probably will be made known when the guilty party is apprehended.
Accidents may occur with the most careful driver but there can be no legitimate excuse for not stopping the car after an innocent child has been run down.
The automobile association feels very bitter over the occurrence and it is not likely its members will rest easily until all facts are known.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
The State Supreme court of Iowa has laid down the rule that automobile drivers who kill persons in the highway by reckless driving may be convicted of manslaughter.
The decision came in the case of G. W. Biewen of Keokuk county, a farmer, who was convicted for the killing of Clarissa Hammes, a child 18 months old.
This is the first Iowa case in which a driver has been sentenced for manslaughter “while using an automobile as a dangerous weapon.” The record shows that Biewen went on and did not offer to aid the child he had run over.

Constantine Dionysius Buch Sr
NOTE
Great grandfather Constantine Buch, was a very special person. He was born the son of Peter and Barbara Buch in Tuensdorf, Germany on May 10, 1832. His mother died and is buried in Germany.
Constatine came to this country with his father, a brother, 3sisters, a brother-in-law, and 4 nieces and nephews. They arrived in New Yorkon November 22, 1855.
He married Magdalena Streit, in April of 1858, at Clear Creek.
Constantine was the leader in getting the Catholic Church started at Clear Creek.
This is a quotation taken from the church centennial book. Quote. There was a log house on the ground that they purchased to build a church. Here the catholics gathered every Sunday, and under the leadership of Constantine Buch,
said their prayers in common, heard the gospel of the day, and an explanation of the same. Thus he kept them instructed in the faith, and by many other sacrifices of time and effort, held them together in the early years.
A later pastor paid him this tribute. "The catholics of Clear Creek will never in this life, fully understand the gratitude they owe Constantine Buch"
His role as leader of the church, included, teaching school in 1865 and again in 1888-89.
Choir leader for their german hymns. Church trustee, for many, many years. He was also janitor-sacristant of the church for years.
This is another quotation taken from the centanial book, about Constantine. Quote. "All during the time of intermettent pastors, Constantine Buch was the man who held the parish together. Called "vergestzte" by the parishoners, (meaning the boss, or one who gives commands), because of his prominence in the parish.
Regularly his name crops up in one or another capacity in the parish.
He was also prominent in business matters, filling the office of assessor of Clear Creek township for four years and that of township clerk for ten years in succession. | Buch, Constantine Dionysius Sr (I371)

DEATH
Howard Russell Stelton died February 14, 2006 at the University Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa after falling in the bathroom at the Halcyon Care Center where he was staying while Rose Ellen was in the hospital overnight. He was in intensive care for 9 days and hospice for 2 days after his fall. He had a large blood clot in his right brain and massive bleeding between the brain and the scull. It is a question whether he had an aneurysm and fell of whether he fell and the blood vessel broke from the pressure of the fall. He had Parkinson’s disease which contributed to his fall.
