NOTE
Jerry. Just wanted to let the Hammes family in Iowa and elsewhere know that Elroy Hammes, Mike and Cecelia’s oldest son passed away in the early afternoon on Saturday, March 15, 2014. He was 98 years old. He had been admitted to the nursing home just the previous evening, but once he got there, he was made comfortable and treated in a considerate, loving manner that he so dearly deserved. The pastor was the last person he was with. Pastor anointed him with oil, said the Benediction, and left him in peace. He died a few moments later. We did not expect him to pass so quickly, I dearly wanted to be with him when he died, but it was not to be. Mom and I got there about 10 minutes later. We are grateful that he is now in the light. It seems somehow fitting that dad/Elroy died on his father (Mike’s) birthday. The funeral will be Saturday. I am sorry to be putting this on Facebook, but thought it would get the word out to all who might want to send a prayer his way. Donna Hammes

NOTE
Wally Josephison
Wally was “Mr. Hockey”. He played from childhood until he lost an eye from a puck about 15 - 20 years ago. Afterwards he managed and was instrumental in registering the “Bentley Generals” hockey club as a AAA Senior Men’s Hockey Team, eligible for the Allan Cup. The Allan Cup is a Canadian championship Trophy for the best senior hockey, and has been presented since 1905, the oldest hockey trophy in the North America, (older than the Stanley Cup in the NHL.)
On April 20, 2013 the Bentley Team won the cup for the second time. Wally had a “hockey” memorial. The honor guard was the team and management, the team dressed in their hockey Jersey’s. He had sip from the cup after the game, and died three days later. The stage at his memorial was decorated with “The Allen Cup” national trophy, Alberta Trophy, Western Canada Trophy, League Trophy and various other team cups and lots of flowers.
Five of us cousins attended, and of course Dave Cramton, Toronto, and Stan and Eileen and their 3 children from Virginia. Stan gave the eulogy, as both he and Eileen grew up with Wally and attended school together at Daysland Alberta where Aunty Burga and Dave lived.
His remains will be buried in Valburga’s grave in the Greiner Plot in Westaskiwin Cemetery, later.

OBITUARIES
A VERY SAD AND SUDDEN DEATH
MRS. N. E. HAMMES OF CLEAR CREEK PASSES LEAVING LARGE FAMILY
Mrs. N. E. Hammes of Clear Creek died at her home last Thursday night. Funeral services were held Monday at the Clear Creek church. Mrs. Hammes passing is one of the saddest deaths we have had to record for a long time. Death is always sad but in this instance Mrs. Hammes leaves her husband and eleven children the oldest only about fifteen years old. For these children to lose a good mother is one of the saddest of blows. While they lose their good mother these children have a father who is one of the very best of fathers and will be to them all that any father can be, of this there is no doubt. Mrs. Hammes was a daughter of Oswalt Goeldner who died a few weeks ago. A complete will appear in these columns later.
SORUCE: Sigourney News Review, Sigourney, Iowa, October 21, 1925
ANNA C. GOELDNER
Sorrow was brought to every heart when word came that Mrs. N. E. Hammes had passed to her eternal reward on Friday, October 16, 1925 at 11:45 p.m. at her home in German township, where she practically spent all her life.
Her illness was of a few hours duration, heart failure being the main cause. Anna C. Goeldner was born June 14, 1880. She was the daughter and only child of Oswald and Susan Goeldner of Sigurney, Iowa. On the 20th anniversary of her parents on February 11, 1908, she was united in marriage to Nicholas E. Hammes, son of Peter and Anna Hammes. The young couple went to house keeping on an adjoining farm for one year, when her parents moved to Sigourney, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Hammes took possession of the Goeldner homestead where they were living at the time of her death.
To this union thirteen children were born, eleven of whom survive her. Seven boys Richard, Lloyd, Leo, Nicholas, Howard, Harold and LeRoy. Four girls Marie, Viola, Clara and Dorothy. Two children dying in infancy. A son on February 7, 1909 and a daughter on October 16, 1925. Besides she leaves her devoted husband and loving mother to mourn her loss. Also many relatives and friends. Anna was a
dutiful wife, a cheerful and loving mother, a neighbor and friend whom everybody loved, which shown by the help and sympathy of her many relatives and friends. And today all that endeared Anna to her husband and children, mother, relatives and friends lives only in their hearts, a sad, sweet memory. The deep sorrow and grief occasioned by her early death will in a great degree be mitigated by the firm belief she is safe in the arms of her Heavenly Father in heaven, spared all the plans, trials and disappointments
of this life.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 o’clock from SS. Peter and Pauls Church, Clear Creek, Iowa. The ladies Altar Society of which she was a member attended in a body. A requiem high mass was celebrated by the pastor, Rev. B. J. Luedtke, who also preached a feeling and beautiful tribute to the life of the deceased, and also gave the absolution at the grave.
Burial was made in the Clear Creek Cemetery, beside her father, who preceded her in death only six weeks ago.
To the sorrowing husband, children, mother and numerous other relatives the sincerest condolences are extended from many a heart the prayer that God who sent this great sorrow will give the grace and strength to nobly bear their great loss and be reconciled to his holy will. May the soul of the departed rest in peace.
Precious mother she has left us,
Left us, yes forever more
But we hope to meet our loved one
On that bright and golden shore
Lonely the house and sad the hour
Since our dear one has gone
But Oh, brighter home thans ours
Is now in Heaven her own.
CARD OF THANKS
Words fail to express our heartfelt thanks for the help and sympathy of our many relatives and friends
in this our dark hour also for the beautiful floral offerings.
N. E. HAMMES and CHILDREN, MRS. SUSAN GOELDNER

OBITUARY
MOTHER WHO LOST EIGHT CHILDREN IN CRASH DIES
SIGOURNEY (AP)—A mother, who lost her eight children in a car-train collision in 1956, died in child-birth at a Sigourney hospital today.
Mrs. Ruth Hammes, 41, was the only survivor of the October 25 accident at a railroad grade crossing near their farm home. She was driving her five oldest children to school at the time and the three youngest ones accompanied her.
Since that tragic morning, Mrs. Hammes and her husband Richard, 49, a farmer, had started a new life. She gave birth to a son, Myron, on January 15, 1958, and this would have been their second child.
MRS. HAMMES died at the same hospital where the last of her eight children passed away after the accident. Cause of her death was not immediately learned. The unborn child was also dead.
It was 8:49 a.m. on that October day when Mrs. Hammes drove down a dusty country road toward the rural grade school. As she drove onto the crossing of the Rock Island branch line, a freight train smashed the 1953 model sedan broadside.
Authorities said the crossing was “a bad one—close to being blind.”
The Hammes farm is about three-quarters of a mile from the crossing.
RELATIVES at the Hammes house said that although Hammes was very sad he was bearing up under this second tragedy to strike his family in less than four years.
Young Myron is being cared for by relatives.
