- GENERAL NOTES
Howard joined the United States Air Force in 1949 and was in the Medical Service from 1950 to 1964. From 1964 to 1968 he was a Loadmaster with an Air Crew in Vietnam. Howard retired after 20 years in 1969. He then received an AA degree from Anoka Community College, attending from 1972 to 1974. He also finished his BA degree from The Minnesota Metropolitan College. Howard worked in Environment Sanitation for 4 years. Howard's hobbies include H.O. gauge railroading and radio-controlled airplanes.
- DEATH
Howard Russell Stelton died February 14, 2006 at the University Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa after falling in the bathroom at the Halcyon Care Center where he was staying while Rose Ellen was in the hospital overnight. He was in intensive care for 9 days and hospice for 2 days after his fall. He had a large blood clot in his right brain and massive bleeding between the brain and the scull. It is a question whether he had an aneurysm and fell of whether he fell and the blood vessel broke from the pressure of the fall. He had Parkinson’s disease which contributed to his fall.

Howard Russell Stelton, age 76, died Tuesday February 14, 2006 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City after failing in health for a number of years.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 am Friday February 17, 2006 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Ed O’Melia officiating. Visitiation will begin 9:00 am Thursday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Thursday. Prayer services will be held 7:00 pm Thursday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Keota, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Endowment Fund, St. James Church Local Charities Fund or Thailand Missions.
Howard was born on April 5, 1929 in Watkins, Minnesota the son of Herbert and Huldah (Upchurch) Stelton. He attended school in Watkins, Minnesota and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota. On June 30, 1971 he was united in marriage to Rose Ellen Reed in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In 1969 Howard retired from 20 years in the Air Force where he was load master and spent two years in Vietnam. After his retirement he worked as a clerk in Admissions at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis until 1995. He and Rose Ellen have been residents of Washington, Iowa since 1995.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in the Air Force. He belonged to the Disabled American Veterans and the Air Force Sergeants Association. Howard never lost his love of the Air Force. He thoroughly enjoyed his nieces and nephews both in Iowa and Minnesota and loved to play cards of any kind. Even as an adult, he never lost his love of the simple things in life such as flying a kite and his electric train set. He liked to go boating and enjoyed nature, spending many hours sitting by the lakeside watching ducks.
Howard is survived by his wife Rose Ellen Reed Stelton of Washington, Iowa; one daughter Rev. Diana (Rev. Neill) Gilbert of MaeSot, Thailand; one son Richard (Shirley) Stelton Rouleau of Weyerhauser, Wisconsin; three granddaughters; five great grandchildren; one sister Lucille Rausch of St. Cloud, Minnesota as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Howard Russell “Max” Stelton Jr., five brothers: Ralph, Chester, Earl, Oliver and Jimmie Stelton and one sister Beatrice Scribner all of Kimball and Watkins, Minnesota.
