- OBITUARIES
Margaret was born September 15,1902 in rural Keokuk County near Harper, Iowa the daughter of Peter and Anna Buch Hammes. She married Walter J. Reed at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Clear Creek on November 29, 1923. He preceded her in death on November 4, 1982. She was born and raised in the Clear Creek community. She was the youngest of eleven children. Her oldest sister was twenty three
years old with three children when Margaret was born. Margaret grew up with her nieces and nephews being almost like a sister to them. She looked up to her older siblings, often polishing her brothers buggy for his Saturday night outing. After she and Walter were married, they farmed near Richland and then Keota. Also for a number of years, they took and raised brother's three year old twins when their mother died at childbirth. In most recent years she has the loving matriarch of a very extended family that includes her neices and nephews who have visted, cared for her and been loved by their aunt. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary Catholic in Keota, the Altar & Rosary Society, St Theresa's Study Club, 76 Improvement and Community Clubs, Pepper Club, 500 Club and the Senior Citizen Center in Keota.

MARGARET M. REED, 96, DIES
Margaret Mary Reed, 96, of Keota died Tuesday, January 5, 1999, at Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness.
She was born September 15, 1902 in rural Keokuk County near Harper, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Anna Buch Hammes. She married Walter J. Reed at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek on November 29, 1923. He preceded her in death on November 4, 1982.
Margaret was raised in the Clear Creek community. They farmed near the Richland and Keota communities after their marriage. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Theresa’s Study Club, 76 Improvement and Community Clubs, Pepper Club, 500 Club and the Senior Citizen Center in Keota.
She is survived by seven children: Eugene P. and wife, Marcella Reed of Washington; Cletus C. and wife, Audrey Reed of Washington; Hugh (Hubert) and wife, Christina Reed of Dewitt, Iowa; Rose Ellen and husband, Howard Stelton of Washington; James W. and wife Arbadella Reed of Keota; Edmund R. and wife, Janice Reed of Keota; Daniel R. and wife, Mary Reed of South English; son-in-law, Harold
Lutteneggar of Phoenix, Arizona; 35 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1982; a daughter, Joanne Luttenegger; three grandchildren, Theresa Reed, Steven and his wife, Melodie Reed and Richard Reed; one great-grandchild, Judah Ziffer; six brothers: Nick, Constant, Pete, Mike L. Mattie and Zeno Hammes; four sisters: Lena Greiner, infant Katie Hammes, Anna Vogel and Cecelia Hammes.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 9, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Reverend Timothy Regan officiating. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Keota.
Memorials may made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Keota Senior Center.
