OBITUARY
A loving mother and patient sufferer has gone to her eternal reward. On Tuesday, August 27, Anna R. Buch was called to her Heavenly reward. She was born in Clear Creek township on May 2, 1859. She was the eldest daughter of Constant and Magdalene Buch. On April 10, 1877, she was united in marriage to Peter Hammes. They settled in Clear Creek township until 1896, when they moved to Plank township and resided there until 1924 when they retired and moved to Harper, Iowa. After two years, owing to ill health they made their home with their sons, C.P. Hammes and P.J. Hammes of this community. On April 10th, 1927, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. Mrs. Hammes had been an invalid for four years. About three years ago she had a stroke which paralyzed her left side and also resulted in the loss of her speech. She was ever patient in her suffering, always thinking of the welfare of others. She was a loving mother, a kind neighbor and a friend to everyone, which was shown by the large attendance at the funeral. Her husband preceded her in death about four months ago. She is survived by five sons and four daughters. The sons are N.E., C.P., P.J., M.L., and Z.J. of this vicinity. The daughters are Mrs. P.L. Greiner of Wetaskawin, Alberta, Canada, Mrs. J.C. Vogel, Chariton, Mrs. M.A. Hammes, Racine, Wis., and Mrs. Walter Reed of Waterloo. 55 grandchildren, one brother, C.P. Buch, 3 sisters, Mrs. P.S. Peiffer, Mrs. John Peiffer and Mrs. Mary Grier, all of this vicinity, besides many other relatives and friends who mourn her death. The funeral services were held at St. Peter and Paul's church at Clear Creek Friday August 30 at 9:00 A.M. The Rev. Fr. Wm. B. Schmidt conducted the funeral services and preached an appropriate sermon for the occasion. Active pallbearters were Raymond Hammes, Leonard Bombei, Arthur Hammes, Norbert Hammes, Alvin Vogel, Ralph Vogel, Anton Buch, Ed Peiffer. Honorary pall bearers were Irene Hammes, Marie Hammes, Bernice Hammes, Marcella Hammes, LaVera Hammes, Leola Hammes, Mildre Bombei and Agnes Hammes. She was laid to rest in the family lot in Clear Creek cemetery. Relatives and friends from a distance attending were: Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Vogel and family of Chariton, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Hammes and family of Racine, Wis., Mrs. John Hammes of Pocahontas, Iowa, Jr. and Mrs. Pete Leinen, Mike Leinen and Frank Jacobs, all of Portsmouth, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stein of Manson, Iowa.
