- OBITUARY
Peter Richard Merz
Harper Richard P. Merz, 76, died at his home Monday. He was born July 30, 1903 near Harper to John and Margaret Sieren Merz. He attended Harper School and William Penn College. He was married Feb. 8, 1927 to Margaret Sondag at Harper. They farmed near Keota and What Cheer and have lived in Harper since his retirement in 1965. In addition, he was a feed dealer and worked as a bookkeeper for Ray Man Co. in Keota. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper and a fourth degree Knight of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, and children, Mrs. Floyd (Jeanette) Hammes of Keswick; Mrs. Jerome (Burnita) Besser of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Robert (Marlene) Hammes of Delta; Mrs. Pat (Rosemary) Shannon of Sigourney; Ronald R. of Harper; Mrs. Ray (Danita) Pergeau of Phoenix, Ariz.; 27 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; his mother, three brothers, Lester of Washington, Iowa; Willie of Des Moines; and Danny of Harper; and a sister Mrs. Leander (Mary) Berg of Keota.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, his father, and three brothers, a sister.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church in Harper with the Rev. Msgr. Edward Greer officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper.
The parish rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by the Knights of Columbus rosary at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
