- OBITUARY
MRS. KATHERINE MERZ was born at Cincinnatio, Ohio on Sept. 22, 1852 and passed away at her home in Harper at the age of 78 years. She was one of a family of ten children, being the oldest daughter of John and Otilia Voegel. At the age of three years, she came with her parents to Iowa and settled on a farm at Clear Creek.
On Feb. 19, 1873 she was united in marriage to Mr. Peter Merz at Clear Creek and to this union four children were born, John of Harper, Will of Maynard, Minn., Mrs. Margaret Sieren of Harper, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith passed away seventeen years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Merz lived on a farm at Clear Creek and moved to Harper about eighteen years ago. The husband passed away four years ago and she has been
faithfully cared for in her declining years by herdaughter, Mrs. Margaret Sieren. She was a loving mother, untiring in her efforts to do for those near and dear to her.
Besides the three children she is survived by 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Margaret Conrad of Keota and by three brothers, Frank of Sigourney, John of Clear Creek and Geo. of Waterloo.
The funeral was held from St. Elizabeth's church of which the deceased was a faithful member. Interment was made beside the husband in St. Elizabeth cemetery.
