NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
On Sunday
The Iowa State Patrol said a west bound car on Interstate 80 crossed the median and hit an eastbound car head-on in the afternoon near Stuart, Iowa. Two trailing vehicles also hit the pile.
Scott Marshall, 22, of Des Moi nes; and James Hammes, 44, of Marion, Iowa, died in the accident, while three people were injured and taken to Des Moines, Iowa hospitals.

- OBITUARY
James E. Hammes, 44, of 1135 Maplecrest Dr., Marion, died Sunday, July 3, 1994, in Broadlawns Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa following an auto accident near Des Moines. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Joe Hawkins will officiate. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Hauschild and husband Jason and their son Joergen of Cedar Rapids; his parents, Edwin Hammes and wife Vivian of Fairfield, Iowa and Emma Jo Johnson and husband Merril of Brownville, Neb.; a special friend, Linda Myers of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Doug and wife Deborah of Wellman; his former wife, Janine of Iowa City, Iowa; two stepbrothers, Charles Mogged Jr. of Moline, Ill., and James Mogged of Chicago; two stepsisters, Kathleen Keller of Algona and Karen Swanson of Phoenix; and nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick, in 1985.
James was born the son of Edwin Hammes and Emma Jo Johnson on May 21, 1950, in Jefferson. He served in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany. He was employed as an engineer at Rockwell-Collins for 15 years. He was a member and past president of Trees Forever. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, friend and uncle. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Jim's name to continue his love of trees and nature. The funds will be used to purchase trees that will be placed in various locations.
