| Nicholas & Anna Hammes with son, Richard, circa 1912 Diggin thru some old family pics in the archive. In the pic is L-R My great uncle Richard, my great grandpa Nicholas his wife Anna and an unidentified family member. I would place this pic around 1912, taken on the family "home place" a modest clapboard two-story farm house typical of Iowa. While there are only 2 children in this pic, the house would go on to house 11 kids, including my Grandma Viola. A summer 40-50 yrs ago would always include spending weeks with my grandma Conklin, in Harper, IA. A town of maybe 200 or so people. We would venture into grandma's attic full of cool old things, pull out the old picnic baskets full of old pics...with her telling me who was who and other family stories. I remembered a lot but wish I had taped the chats. Good times.

- OBITUARY
N. E. HAMMES
N. E. Hammes was born in Clear Creek Township, September 4, 1881, son of Peter and Anna Buch
Hammes. The early years of his life were spent in Clear Creek township. His education was typical of that
day attending district No. 2 school and Saints Peter and Paul’s school. He with his parents and their family, moved to Plank township in 1899.
He was married February 11, 1908 to Anna Goeldner. With the exception of one year he spent his entire married life on the old Goeldner homestead which he purchased from his father-in-law.
Thirteen children were born to this union. The oldest child, a son, and the youngest, a daughter, died in infancy.
The living are Richard of Sigourney, Iowa on the home place; Marie, Mrs. William Heisdorffer, and
Viola, Mrs. Cleo Conklin of Harper, Iowa; Clara, Mrs. Earl Swanson of Fairfield, Iowa; Lloyd, Dorothy, Mrs. Gordon Kerber, Leo, Nicholas, Harold and LeRoy of Sigourney, Iowa and S/Sgt Howard in the armed forces in Korea.
His wife preceded him in death, October 16, 1925. From that time on, he was both mother and father to his children. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Susan Goeldner, now an invalid, also did a lot toward the care and rearing of these children.
Also preceding him in death were his father and mother, two brothers, Mathias and Peter J., and one
sister Kathie; also his father-in-law, Oswald Goeldner.
Mr. Hammes was in failing health for the last two years and was confined to his bed for the last six weeks with a heart ailment. He accepted his suffering without complaint, never wishing to be a burden to anyone. He passed away Monday night, February 19, 1951 at the age of 69 years, 5 months, 15 days.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 22, 9:30 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul’s church, Clear Creek and burial was in the Parish cemetery. The Rev. Paul Kleinfelder was in charge of the services. Present in the sanctuary were the Rev. M. J. Diamond of Harper, Iowa, Rev. O. F. DeCoursey of Fairfield, Iowa and Rev. J. M. Mackin of Sigourney, Iowa.
Servers for the requiem high mass were Kenny Conklin, Larry Swanson, Edmund Reed, Leland and Terry Horras. Pallbearers were Norbert, Herbert, Laurence Donald Hammes, Alvin Vogel, Eugene Reed, Omer, Floyd, Paul, Cletus and Kenneth Hammes and Hubert Reed, all nephews of Mr. Hammes.
Besides being a farmer all of his life, Mr. Hammes was also a dealer in furs, hides, wool, lumber and iron. He lived his life by “The Golden Rule.” He was always held in high esteem by those who knew him. Words could not express the love and respect he felt for his children and grandchildren. He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his children, 28 grandchildren; three brothers, Constant P., Mike L., Zeno J., of Sigourney, Iowa and four sisters, Mrs. Helen Greiner, Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Anna Vogel, Sigourney, Iowa; Mrs. Mike A. Hammes, Racine, Wisconsin and Mrs. Walter Reed of Keota, Iowa.
Attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Leinen, Mark Leinen and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hendricks from Portsmouth, Iowa, besides innumerable relatives and friends from Fairfield, Iowa, Washington, Iowa, Kalona, Iowa, Davenport, Iowa, Sigourney, Iowa, Keota, Iowa and other surrounding towns.
