OBITUARY
Hazel Gau, 91
Sept. 23, 1901— April 27, 1993
PORTSMOUTH — Hazel Elizabeth Gau, daughter of Amos and Hattie (O'Banion) Bendon was born Sept. 23, 1901 near Neola. She died April 27, 1993, at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan at age 91 years, 7 months and 4 days. She was baptized and received her First Communion at Tilden, NE. She was confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Neola. Following graduation from St. Mary's High School in Portsmouth, she attended Normal Training Classes at St. Joseph Academy in Ottumwa, where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught rural schools in Shelby and Harrison counties for six years.
Dec. 30, 1924, she married Audrew Gau at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Five children were born to this union. After their marriage, they farmed in Cass twp.
near Portsmouth. Following her husband's death Sept. 10, 1991, she continued to reside on the family farm near Portsmouth. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth. During this time, she held several offices in the Rosary Confraternity and was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Katherine's Court #266 of Earling.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Jack and Owen Bendon. She is survived by her children, Donna (William) Buckley of Harlan; Dorothy (Jack Wolf of Greenville, ML; Phil (Connie) Gau of Portsmouth; Dean (Micky) Gau of Woodbine; and Lois (Don) Rosenow of Tipton; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elva White of Colorado Springs, CO.; nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated April 30, 1993, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth with Rev. Mike Mclaughlin Celebrant and Msgr. Edward Kelly, the Homilist. Concelebrating was Rev. Jim Buckley of Omaha, NE.; and Rev. Guy Gau of Sioux Falls, S.D. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery in Portsmouth with Ron Gau, Jeff Wolf, Rick Gau, Dave Gau, Craig Rosenow, Scott Gau, and Duane Buckley casketbearers. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
