      NOTES FOR CHARLES WILLIAM ALLAR
Charles William Allar was born July 7, 1924 on the family farm near Harper, Iowa. He was the fourth child born to William Anton and Matilda Catherine Vogel. Billy as he was known to his family was born with “Downs Syndrome.” All who I have talked with remembers him as being full of life and always very close to his Mother and Father with whom he lived with his entire life. As a youth I remember playing with him whenever we would go to my grandfather’s farm for Sunday dinner east of Sigourney, Iowa. Billy was just another one of us kids; he was a gentle man with a kind soul. Billy would push us kids in the swing or climb the apple tree to pick those big green apples we used to eat and then get a stomachache. When his Mother would call he would always go running as soon as he heard his name called. Dick Strieck remembers that when the family came to stay, Billy always made sure they had blankets and quilts to keep them warm. Billy also had a little altar in his room, which had vases and holy pictures by it. When the family went to church every morning Billy always went with them.
One time the family was looking for Billy and he was found in farm lot leading a bull around as if it were a pet. No one else could even approach this animal and he was referred to as “the mean bull.” Billy was strong as an ox and he spent his life doing chores and helping his parents. All of his cousins have nothing but kind things to say about him. He died March 11, 1969, and is buried next to his parents in St. Elizabeth cemetery, in Harper, Iowa.
