Notes |
- Omer John Hammes
Omer and his cousin and good freind, Vern Vogel, struck out for the Dakotas in 1938 to follow the harvest. From there they rode the rails to Washington where they picked apples and peaches. On their way home, they stopped in Idaho and picked hops. They also rode the rails back home, hitchingrides on freight trains.
Omer served in the Army during World War II.
Right after the war was over, Omer along with his brother, Herbert, began the Hammes Hardware, Feed & Supply in Harper, Keokuk County, Iowa. Omer ran the hardware store and Herbert ran the feed and supply side, delivering feed to area farmers. They also incubated baby chicks, which they sold.
Omer retired at age 65, but still helps out at the store on numerous occasions.
In August of 2006 Omer and Burnita sold their home at 306 Hutchinson, Harper, Iowa and bought and moved into a new condominum in Sigourney, Iowa. They had lived in Harper nearly all their married lives.
