- OBITUARY
Floyd Hammes, 75, of Sigourney, died Tues., Jan. 21, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, the son of Peter and Teresa (Gries) Hammes. He grew up in the Clear Creek area and graduated from St. Elizabeth Catholic High School. He served in the United States Army from June of 1945 until November of 1946, being honorably discharged as a Tec 5. On April 17, 1948, he married Jeanette Merz at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. A lifelong resident of Keokuk County, he farmed and was an independent businessman, selling fertilizer for many years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Iowa Angus Association. He also served on the Keokuk County Expo Board and was a leader for the Prairie Rustlers 4-H Club. He enjoyed John Deere tractors, golfing, playing cards, dancing, camping, the Iowa State Fair, going south for the winter and hunting and fishing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette of Sigourney; two daughters, Sheila Beckman of Crystal Lake, Ill. and Cindy Hauschilt of What Cheer; five sons, Dan of Johnston, Ted of Story City, Scott of Ankeny, Lynn of Iowa Falls and Todd of Charleston, W.V.; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Raymond of Coralville, Omer of Harper, Herb of Sigourney and Wilfred of Bettendorf; and two sisters, Irene Willis of Bettendorf and Bernice Heuberger of Milwaukee, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of Christian Burial was held Fri., Jan. 24 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with the Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Interment was at St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery in Harper. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Keokuk County or St. Mary Catholic Church.
