  NOTE We lost my nephew, Jerome Reed, last fall. He had cancer in his upper esophagus so he could not swallow. He lived only about 4 months after they discovered his problem. He is buried very close to Hubert in the National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal. Jerome Thomas Reed, son of Hubert Reed and Shirley Kral, died on Sept. 11, 2010 at the home of his brother, Ron in Davenport, Ia. He was retired from 20 years in the National Guard and was a concrete worker surfacing streets, driveways, etc. His coworkers and he were great friends. During the time of his illness, they came and helped him move, do his yard work and care for him as they could. His boss gave the workers the day off to go to the funeral and they were all there in their green Kelly Co. shirts. They also drove the company trucks in the funeral procession to the National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal Island. He was buried very near to his father, Hubert Joseph Reed, who was also buried in the National Cemetery. Jerome truly knew the Lord and followed him closely in the last years of his life. Jerome is survived by his mother, Shirley Ann (Kral) Owens; and his siblings (and spouses), David (Jane) Reed, Billings, Mont., Pam (Steve) Frost, Taylor Ridge, Ill., Ron (Carolyn) Reed, Davenport, Jeff (Cindy) Reed, Blue Grass, Iowa, and John (Valerie) Reed, Davenport. His father, Hubert Reed, preceded him in death. Jerome was born March 1, 1958, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and grew up on a farm near Donahue, Iowa. He graduated from North Scott High School, Eldridge, Iowa, in 1977. After high school Jerome went to Nebraska, starting a career as a concrete worker. While in Nebraska his love of farm and country led him to join the Army Reserves, and work as a ranch hand. Ranching with Don and Grace Ackles became a cherished familial relationship. Returning to Iowa in the early ’90s, Jerome joined Kelly Construction as a concrete finisher and transferred to the Iowa National Guard. Jerome retired from military service (1980-2001) as a Gray Era Veteran from the Cedar Rapids Detachment of the 185th Regional Training Institute.
