  Kathie Irene Smith OBITUARY Kathie Hammes Kathie Irene Hammes, 62, died May 4, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She was born December 4, 1953 in Sigourney, Iowa to Hubert Leroy and Anna Mae (Kephart) Smith. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1972. On September 11, 1976 she married Ray Hammes at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper, Iowa. Kathie was employed at S&S Shoe Store from 1975-1987 and later attained an AA degree from Indian Hills Community College in 1992. She has been the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent for Sigourney Community School District since December 1992. Kathie loved being physically active, hiking in the mountains of Jackson Hole, enjoying good food, watching the Hawkeye football team in the Fall, and most of all playing with her granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Anne Mae, her sister Vickie Shifflett and brother Nick Smith. She is survived by her husband Ray, daughter Abbie (Brett) Terp and granddaughter Mia of Fairway, Kansas, sister Barb (Terry) Fritchen of Sigourney, brother Doug Smith of Washington, and brother Eric Smith of Cedar Rapids.
