OBITUARY
Mrs. Mike Hammes, Sr., of Sigourney, Iowa, 71, died Sunday night about 9:45 o’clock at the Saint Joseph hospital in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she had been a patient since February 4 with the exception of about four weeks. She had been failing health for the past three years.
As Catherine Adrain, she was born November 18, 1881 on a farm one half mile east of Saint Peter and Paul’s church, Clear Creek, and spent her girlhood in that community. She was the daughter of Peter and Margaret Braunshausen Adrain.
On January 21, 1900, she was married to John Paul Peiffer and they became parents of three children, two sons, Arnold and Adrain and one daughter, Bernice. They lived on a farm near Pleasant Plain, Iowa and Mr. Peiffer preceded her in death on December 16, 1907.
She was married to Mike Hammes Sr. on October 14, 1910 and they lived on a farm one mile west of Saints Peter and Paul’s church until retiring and moving to Sigourney, Iowa in 1944. They became the parents of five children, three sons, Edward, Joe and Leon and two daughters, Agnes and Dorothy. Mr. Hammes preceded her in death on October 12, 1946.
Mrs. Hammes was a member of Saint Mary’s church in Sigourney, Iowa and of Saint Mary’s Altar society and the Clear Creek Altar society.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Carl Vogel and Mrs. Albert Horras of Keota, Iowa and Mrs. Howard Horras of Ollie, Iowa; five sons, Arnold Peiffer of Fort Wayne, Indiana, L. Adrain Peiffer and Joe Hammes of Davenport, Iowa; Edward Hammes of Richland, Iowa and Leon Hammes of Harper; 26 grandchildren and four great-grand-children. Also living are one sister, Mrs. Margaret Kessel of Iowa City, Iowa and one brother, John P. Adrain of Clear Creek township.
The funeral service was held Wednesday morning, May 6, at Saints Peter and Paul’s church, with the Rev. J. M. Mackin of Saint Mary’s church as celebrant of the solemn requiem high mass; the Rev Paul Kleinfelder of Saints Peter and Paul’s church as deacon and the Rev. Paul Wetzstein of Pleasant Pain, Iowa as subdeacon. Burial was in the parish cemetery at Clear Creek.
