Obituary for Peter Hammes Sr

OBITUARY

Peter Hammes, one of ten children born to Michael and Margaret Hammes, was born at Trier, Germany on May 26, 1852, and died on April 20, 1929, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 25 days. He emigrated to this country, with his family in 1871, at the age of nineteen years, settling in Clear Creek Township when this county was in its pioneer days. On April 19, 1877, he was united in marriage to Anna Buch residing in Clear Creek township until 1896, when he moved to German township, now Plank township, where he practically lived the remainder of his life with the exception of two years which were spent at Harper, Iowa. To this union were born 11 children, two of whom preceded him in death. Those surviving him are, his wife, who has been an invalid for several years, five sons and four daughters -- Nicholas E., Constant P., Peter J., Michael L., Zeno J., who reside in this vicinity. Mrs. P.L. Greiner of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. J.C. Vogel of Chariton, Iowa, Mrs. M.A. Hammes of Racine, Wisconsin, Mrs. Walter Reed of Wellman, Iowa, Fifty-four grand children, two brothers and one sister, besides a host of relatives and friends who mourn his death.
Mr. Hammes was well known and highly respected in this community and had many friends. Despite the fact that he had been ill for many months his death occurred rather unexpectedly. Mr. and Mrs. Hammes had been making their home with their sons, C.P. and P.J. Hammes.
The funeral was held at Ss. Peter and Pauls Church at Clear Creek, at 10 o'clock, Tuesday, April 23rd, and was largely attended, despite the bad roads. Fr. Schmidt conducted the funeral services. His final remains were laid to rest in the family lot at Clear Creek Cemetery.
